We are not broke, we are just... managing
"Eh jom makan?"
You check your bank app.
Not zero, but not comfortable either.
You still reply:
"Okay la, can."
Because in Malaysia, we are not really broke.
We are just... managing.
The cycle we all know
Salary masuk, feel rich for two or three days.
Bills, okay still fine.
Mid-month, chill.
End of month, careful already.
But life still jalan:
- kopi still buy
- Grab still press
- weekend still go out
Not careless.
Just normal.
We do not say no, we adjust
Spend a bit more today, cut a bit tomorrow.
Tell yourself:
"Next month I control."
But next month, same thing again.
Actually, we are doing better than we think
We are:
- still paying our commitments
- still showing up to work
- still finding small ways to enjoy life
That already means something.
"Managing" is not failure.
It is just a stage.
Make it easier for yourself
No need strict budgeting.
No need stress.
Just small shifts.
Delay first
Before spending, pause.
Say "later."
Most impulse buys disappear on their own.
Pick one limit only
Example: outside food budget for the week.
No need to track everything at once.
Just control one area first.
Save a little, early
Even RM20 to RM50.
Move it first, then use the rest.
Small savings still count when you make them consistent.
Reduce decisions
Same lunch spot.
Same kopi.
Fewer random choices.
Less random decision-making usually means less random spending.
Final thought
"We are just managing" is something a lot of us say.
But managing does not mean stuck.
With a few small habits, you slowly move from:
"Can survive."
To:
"Actually quite okay."
No big changes.
Just better control, little by little.
